Back to purity, back to simplicity.

I’m keeping this here for myself, for future reference. Enjoy.

Dieter Rams ~ 10 Principles of Good Design

  1. Good design is innovative.

    • The possibilities for progression are not, by any means, exhausted. Technological development is always offering new opportunities for original designs. But imaginative design always develops in tandem with improving technology, and can never be an end in itself.

  2. Good design makes a product useful.

    • A product is bought to be used. It has to satisfy not only functional, but also psychological and aesthetic criteria. Good design emphasizes the usefulness of a product whilst disregarding anything that could detract from it.

  3. Good design is aesthetic.

    • The aesthetic quality of a product is integral to its usefulness because products are used every day and have an effect on people and their well-being. Only well-executed objects can be beautiful.

  4. Good design makes a product understandable.

    • It clarifies the product’s structure. Better still, it can make the product clearly express its function by making use of the user’s intuition. At best, it is self-explanatory.

  5. Good design is unobtrusive.

    • Products fulfilling a purpose are like tools. They are neither decorative objects nor works of art. Their design should therefore be both neutral and restrained, to leave room for the user’s self-expression.

  6. Good design is honest.

    • It does not make a product appear more innovative, powerful or valuable than it really is. It does not attempt to manipulate the consumer with promises that cannot be kept.

  7. Good design is long-lasting.

    • It avoids being fashionable and therefore never appears antiquated. Unlike fashionable design, it lasts many years – even in today’s throwaway society.

  8. Good design is thorough down to the last detail.

    • Nothing must be arbitrary or left to chance. Care and accuracy in the design process show respect towards the consumer.

  9. Good design is environmentally friendly.

    • Design makes an important contribution to the preservation of the environment. It conserves resources and minimizes physical and visual pollution throughout the lifecycle of the product.

  10. Good design is as little design as possible.

    • Less, but better – because it concentrates on the essential aspects, and the products are not burdened with non-essentials. Back to purity, back to simplicity.

A message for the few

If you by any chance stumble upon my blog… this is a message for you, a message for the few.

Lately I’ve been posting a lot of content into several blogs that belong to the company that I work for, since I’m the sole IT department (and anything computer related for that matter), I decided I can make an effort to update this blog more often, as in one to four times a month. That’s the goal.

I noticed myself posting different stuff I find on the internet on facebook, some quotes in the messenger I use, even posted recently on twitter, so it shouldn’t be that hard.

Adieu and see you soon. JM

“Nine Million Bicycles” by Katie Melua

There are nine million bicycles in Beijing
That’s a fact,
It’s a thing we can’t deny
Like the fact that I will love you till I die.

We are twelve billion light years from the edge,
That’s a guess,
No-one can ever say it’s true
But I know that I will always be with you.

I’m warmed by the fire of your love everyday
So don’t call me a liar,
Just believe everything that I say

There are six billion people in the world
More or less
and it makes me feel quite small
But you’re the one I love the most of all

We’re high on the wire
With the world in our sight
And I’ll never tire,
Of the love that you give me every night

There are nine million bicycles in Beijing
That’s a Fact,
it’s a thing we can’t deny
Like the fact that I will love you till I die

And there are nine million bicycles in Beijing
And you know that I will love you till I die!

E-book viewer and collection manager?

I use Mozilla Firefox for almost everything nowadays. Last week I started looking for an ebook reader that supported PDF, CHM, DjVu, TXT, ODT and maybe DOC, RTF, PPT, TIFF, LIT and PDB preferrably in a tabbed display; after researching for a little while, I found nothing to support all those files. The closest tools that I found where: STDU Viewer and ICE Book Reader. In the end I decided for a simple solution: Mozilla Firefox with 2 plug-ins and 2 add-ons do the magic.

With these 4 you can make sure 99% of my ebooks are covered.

My Firefox wish list:

  • An ebook manager/browser to sort my collection (why not include all those plug-ins in a single download).
  • Kempelton large theme FF3 compatible or a Naver theme with large icons.
  • Sober simple nice minimalistic small icons theme for FF3.

BTW: I tried to open chm files from the windows  explorer and from the firefox file manager (just type c:\ or whatever folder you like) and firefox always asked me where to download the file. So you really have to use the chm sidebar or toolbar button to open chm files inside firefox.

Other suggestions? Thoughts? Leave me a note.

Creation, Evolution, Faith, Fanaticism

Your faith or mine. Evolution vs. Creation.

Not Intelligent Design

Everyone has the right to believe whatever they want, as long as this does not become a danger, or affect negatively others. I prefer to believe in a Supreme Being creating us, maybe because I like the idea of an Intelligent Design.

Imagine yourself walking on Detroit when suddenly you hear several explosions! You look at the sky and see millions of pieces, from the surrounding automobile manufacturing plants, flying in the air. But to your amazement, they start to build by themselves, the explosion gave these pieces the right movement, and height, and not only that, even screws are getting tightened, and axles, tires, transmission, fluids, gasoline, tank, wheel, tires, it’s even getting some custom paint job. Can you imagine one in a zillion chance this explosions doing that, and at the end the car falling on the ground, starting itself and working fine for several years?

Everybody knows creation is mostly a religious matter, but most people do not know that evolution needs faith. Evolution is still a theory, and although is thought in schools as fact, nobody has ever proved this theory, in other words, if you believe in evolution, because you want to believe in these so called “scientists”, you need FAITH… yes, no matter how ugly it sounds to you, if you chose to believe in evolution, that needs faith on your part, because you are believing something nobody has ever proved. Thing is, religious people know that believing in creation is faith, but evolutionists believe they are very scientific. At the end of the day, you should have freedom to choose what to believe, the wrong thing to do would be to become a fanatic, either a religious fanatic or a “science” fanatic, prove it to yourself or have faith in it, but don’t become a fanatic. Oh, and do not teach theory as fact, please, be honest… and have some faith, any faith.

Love Rescue Me

U2 - Rattle and Hum

Written by Bono and Bob Dylan, Bob; Hewson, Paul; Mullen, Larry (Jr); Evans, Dave; Clayton, Adam.
Performed by U2 and Bob Dylan

// Rattle and Hum // Love Rescue Me

Love rescue me
Come forth and speak to me
Raise me up
And don’t let me fall.
No man is my enemy
My own hands imprison me.
Love rescue me.

Many strangers have I met
On the road to my regret
Many lost who seek to find themselves in me.
They ask me to reveal
The very thoughts they would conceal.
Love, rescue me.

And the sun in the sky
Makes a shadow of you and I
Stretching out as the sun sinks in the sea.
I’m here without a name
In the palace of my shame
I said, love, rescue me.

In the cold mirror of a glass
I see my reflection pass
I see the dark shades of what I used to be.
I see the purple of her eyes
The scarlet of my lies.
Love, rescue me.

Yeah, though I walk
In the valley of the shadow
Yet, I will fear no evil.
I have cursed thy rod and staff
They no longer comfort me.
Love, rescue me.

Sha la la la etc.
I said love, love, rescue me.

Yeah, I’m here without a name
In the palace of my shame
I said love, rescue me.

I’ve conquered my past
The future is here at last
I stand at the entrance to a new world I can see.
The ruins to the right of me
Will soon have lost sight of me.
Love, rescue me.

I just wanted to share this song with all of you, it tells a story… it asks for help (duh!), but it does it in a very poetic way. Can you sing? Can you ask for help when you need help? When you need for someone to rescue you?

Books, Random Thoughts, Religion

Thieves and Crosses

I’am currently reading the book “México Acribillado” (Mexico Riddled -as in riddled with bullets-) from author Francisco Martín Moreno. I like this book so much that I started looking for more books of his own at his editorial house called Alfaguara (México) and found this other book of the same author titled “México ante Dios” (Mexico in front of God). At the website they used the following quote for this book:

“En tiempos de las bárbaras legiones, de lo alto de las cruces colgaban a los ladrones… Hoy, en pleno siglo del progreso y de las luces, del pecho de los ladrones cuelgan las cruces”. Anónimo, siglo XIX.

Let me translate this to you as truthful as possible:

“In times of the barbaric legions at the top of the crosses thieves were hunged … Today, in full century of progress and lights, crosses hang from the chest of thieves.” Anonymous, XIX .

How truthful this is today. Just turn your TV on and watch. Almost every “religious” channel asks for money. And how about those “Pastors” that steal money off their congregation, aside from their salary, and use it for personal purposes.

If you have something to say about it, leave me a comment. Read me next time.
